*Courses include 10 consecutive weekly classes (barring major holidays). Classes meet once a week for 2 hours at our location, or online. The curriculum of our language program is built for groups of three to nine students who complete the material in ten weeks. We also offer more immersive classes that are seven weeks for two students, and five weeks for private lessons.
Students will learn to say basic greetings and carry on simple, basic conversation. For example, asking and answering who you are, where you live, or work, etc.
Students will be able to express likes and dislikes.
Students will learn using the Pinyin program, so they can sound out the new vocabulary correctly on their own. Students will also be taught to count from 1 to 99 in Chinese.
Students will learn to ask and answer questions, such as: Are you …, What is …, and be able to ask people’s age correctly utilizing proper honorifics.
This level utilizes vocabulary and grammar learned in previous courses, but teaches new vocabulary and grammar for getting around from location to location, and explaining location to others. This way you can ask for and communicate directions whether in a home or around town.
Students will get to know the different types of transportation and they will be able to order meals in Chinese restaurants.
Students will learn to register for a social activity over the phone.
Students will learn to get to know the arrangement inside a home, such as: the living room, kitchen, bed room and the furniture that is located in those rooms.
Students will learn to describe different types of weather, and the class will introduce the use of the present continuous tense.
Students will learn to express their habits and describe different flavors of food (such as hot, spicy, sweet and sour).
Students will learn to describe living conditions and surroundings. They will also be able to send mail from inside a Chinese post office or a parcel service.
Students will become familiar with the exchange rate between the Chinese currency and other countries.
Students will be able to visit a clinic or hospital and see a doctor (for things such as a cold or the flu).
Students will learn to ask and answer questions around social and professional scheduling. They will learn how to schedule a meeting, or book tickets at a box office for a movie or sport.
Students will learn school and class room conversation such as discussing home work or different majors in college, and the living conditions of dormitory life.
Students will learn to talk about their goals and dreams, and of future opportunities.
Students will learn to apply for a job in Chinese.
At the 400+ level, the student will practice conversations in Chinese in formal and informal settings. At this point, we begin including technical language and vocabulary specific to a person's career. For example, if a person is a doctor, we would be more specific in studying the material for the medical field… and for the business trade, classes are more concentrated on business situations.
